- Ask one's name in Chinese - Unit 6
In English when we ask other'name just with a simple sententence: "What's your name?" or "May I have your name please!"
A Chinese name has the following order: Family name + First name = Fullname
When we want to know a respected person's name, we always ask his/her Family name:
您贵姓? nín guì xìng? What is your family name?
我姓张 /Wo xing Zhang/ My family name is Zhang.
When we want to know a person such as friend's name, we ask his/her fullname:
We use: Pronoun +你叫什么名字?/jiào shénme míngzì?/
你叫什么名字? Nǐ jiào shénme míngzì? You are called by what name?
叫 /jiào/ means call or to be called
什么 /shénme/ What
名字/míngzi/ Name
And the answer structure is: Pronoun + 叫 + Fullname
Example:
A: 您贵姓?
B: 我姓张, 我叫“张东” /zhangdong/. 你叫什么名字?
A: 我叫麦克 /màikè/ I am called Mike
