How to negate in Chinese - Unit 8
In the sixth lesson we will look at our first negative adverb, 不 bù. When combined with 是 shì to be it creates the meaning "is not, isn't".
Ask one's name in Chinese - Unit 6
In English when we ask other'name just with a simple sententence: "What's your name?" or "May I have your name please!"
A Chinese name has the following order: Family name + First name = Fullname
When we want to know a respected person's name, we always ask his/her Family name:
您贵姓? nín guì xìng? What is your family name?
我姓张 /Wo xing Zhang/ My family name is Zhang.
When we want to know a person such as friend's name, we ask his/her fullname:
We use: Pronoun +你叫什么名字?/jiào shénme míngzì?/
你叫什么名字? Nǐ jiào shénme míngzì? You are called by what name?
叫 /jiào/ means call or to be called
什么 /shénme/ What
名字/míngzi/ Name
And the answer structure is: Pronoun + 叫 + Fullname
Example:

In the last lesson we learn about Countries and Nationalities, today we continue to introduce one's nationalities in Chinese
我是美国人。 Wǒ shì Měiguórén. I am American.
你是美国人吗? Nǐ shì Měiguórén ma? Are you American?
他是中国人。Tā shì Zhōngguórén. He is Chinese.
他是中国人吗? Tā shì Zhōngguórén ma? Is he Chinese?
她是德国人。Tā shì Déguórén. She is German.
你们是印度人吗?Nǐmen shì Yìndùrén ma? Are you all Indian?

Make a simple question in Chinese
Add the word 吗 "ma" after the normal sentence.
你是学生。 Nǐ shì xuéshēng. You are a student.
你是学生吗? Nǐ shì xuéshēng ma? Are you a student?

Verb "To be" and introduce one's job
The word 是 shī mean "to be"
我是老师。 Wǒ shì lǎoshī. I am a teacher.

我 Wǒ = I, me, my
